The liquid culture method detects mycobacteria faster (1-2 weeks) and has a higher positive detection rate compared to solid culture. The KIT uses the MGIT 960 system by BD (USA). This method measures the change in oxygen consumption, which is detected by fluorescence, to confirm the presence of mycobacterial growth.
Method
Culture in liquid media (BD MGIT 960 system) is conducted to detect mycobacterial growth. Readings are taken hourly from the liquid culture system.

Turnaround Time
Positive culture:
approximately 1-2 weeks required. After confirmation of positivity, Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex is identified using Ziehl-Neelsen staining and TB Ag MPT64 Rapid test.
Negative culture:
after culturing for a maximum of 6 weeks, if negative readings are obtained, the result is reported as negative
